Lake Meredith National Recreation Area

In the 1960s, a new view of national parks emerged and with it a new wave of parks including Lake Meredith National Recreation Area just north of Amarillo. This massive reservoir sits in a region of the state where large bodies of water are rare.

The National Park Service manages more than a dozen national recreation areas. Lake Meredith is one that’s preserved to honor the canyons that have been cut through the region by the Canadian River. This has been home to humans for more than 13,000 years.

It’s an oasis on the plains that draws visitors for hiking, camping and boating. Visitors also have a chance to fish and hunt at Lake Meredith.
