Made in Texas: Episode 102 Now Available for Streaming

Episode 102 of Made in Texas is now available to stream on the PBS website. The second installment, titled Jesse Treviño: The Artist, The Man originally aired on November 10 on KLRN San Antonio.

From journalist Randy Beamer, the documentary explores the life and work of San Antonio artist Jesse Treviño. Beamer interviewed Treviño extensively many times over 40 years and built a close relationship with his subject. In never-before-seen videos and interviews with Treviño and friends, the documentary provides an intimate portrait of the man who transformed Chicano art in Texas.

Treviño was born in Mexico and grew up on the west side of San Antonio, TX with his 12 siblings. A natural artist, he received a scholarship to attend an art college in New York and honed his craft in portraiture. After one year in school, he was drafted into the military to serve in Vietnam, where he was almost lethally injured and lost his dominant hand.

Determined to learn to draw with his left hand and make art for his home town, he returned to San Antonio and created multiple iconic murals, going on to become one of the city’s most famous artists. Beamer’s documentary celebrates his talent, tenacity and legacy in the Chicano heritage of San Antonio.
