An Approved TxVSN Professional Development Provider


The Texas Virtual School Network provides online courses to supplement schools' instructional programs. TxVSN-approved professional development is required for all teachers leading online courses for TxVSN provider school districts. The PBS TeacherLine of Texas training emphasizes the iNACOL National Standards for Quality for Online Teaching which help teachers gain foundational skills and access support resources for online instruction.

TxVSN has approved a combined professional development opportunity that includes an online teacher training course, followed by an annual subscription to a professional learning community:

Step One - Register for the course
  • Online Facilitator Training I - Mastering the Skills of Online Teaching is an introduction to becoming an effective online facilitator; 6 weeks/45-hrs for $525; more details below. For groups of 12 or more, course start dates can be scheduled upon request.

Step Two - Enroll in the professional learning community, Peer Connection
  • Registration details for the professional learning community, PBS TeacherLine Peer Connection will be sent upon successful completion of OFT 1 course; $129 per annual subscription.

Online Facilitator Training I – Mastering the Skills of Online Teaching: 6 weeks/45-hrs; $525.

To provide new online teachers with opportunities to gain foundational skills and access support resources for online instruction, PBS TeacherLine of Texas offers a six-week, 45-hour, graduate-level course. Successful graduates of the OFT qualify for 45 hours of state required CPE re-certification hours as well as 3-hours of optional graduate school credit.

The OFT is offered during each of TeacherLine’s four course terms between October 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010. The start date for each term is:

Winter term: January 27, 2010
Spring term: March 31, 2010
Summer term: June 23, 2010

The OFT utilizes a multimedia-based environment, research-based readings, discussions, collaborative projects, and other interactive experiences to immerse online teachers nationwide in the same asynchronous online learning model that their students will experience.





PBS TeacherLine’s Peer Connection is a professional learning community customized for teachers who have completed Online Facilitator Training and who are teaching via the Texas Virtual School Network; annual subscription for $129.


Following your OFT Training, we will contact you to enroll into the PBS TeacherLine Peer Connection professional learning community for one year.

PBS TeacherLine’s Peer Connection is a real-time learning community that engages teachers in collaborative professional development focused on improving online instruction throughout the school year. Participating teachers are provided with job-embedded professional development through: research-based resource collections for supporting online instruction, a discussion board for communicating with other TxVSN online teachers who have been trained through PBS TeacherLine, and a Texas-based mentor who is intimately familiar with Texas’ demographic needs and instructional standards, can provide just-in-time support for each teacher’s problem-based needs, answer questions, and lead regular (e.g. monthly) discussions about online instruction.

TEA has announced key partnerships to implement critical functions of the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN), including professional development for teaching online. Prior to teaching courses offered via the TxVSN, teachers are required to take the TxVSN-approved professional development that specifically focuses on learning to teach effectively in the online environment.
